External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar convened with BRICS counterparts to reinforce the bloc’s pivotal role in shaping a multipolar world during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Highlighting the importance of the meeting, Jaishankar noted its significance for promoting multi-polarity and global diversity. Originally established with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS has expanded this year to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. The meeting was chaired by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
The discussions primarily centered on reforming multilateralism and enhancing developmental initiatives. Among key topics were the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), debt management, fair trade, and poverty alleviation.
Responding to inquiries about India’s benefits from memberships in various groupings such as the Quad, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), Jaishankar emphasized the unique contributions each forum provides to India’s strategic goals. He stated, “Each one is a different facet of our interests and activities.” He further remarked that BRICS was formed to represent the voices of non-Western nations seeking equitable representation on the global stage.
