The Borno State Government, led by Governor Babagana Zulum, is actively planning to invest in sustainable practices and resilient infrastructure in response to recent flood disasters affecting Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
In a statewide address, Governor Zulum emphasized the need for innovative strategies to prepare for future environmental challenges. “We will turn this calamity into an opportunity to enhance our infrastructure and practices so they can better withstand nature’s forces,” he stated. He also urged stakeholders, including community leaders, business owners, and non-governmental organizations, to collaborate in developing effective assistance strategies.
To guide the recovery and rebuilding efforts, the governor announced the formation of a multi-stakeholder committee to conduct a sector-by-sector assessment of the impact of the floods. “Recovery from this disaster cannot be the sole responsibility of the government; it requires a collective effort from all sectors of society,” Zulum noted.
Expressing his heartfelt empathy to the flood victims, he acknowledged the severe impact of the recent disasters: “Many of our streets, homes, and businesses have been submerged, resulting in significant property loss and disruption to countless lives.” He reassured the community of the government’s commitment to provide immediate relief to those affected and urged unity in this time of crisis.
“Borno is known for its resilience, and now more than ever, we must harness that strength,” he declared. As part of the recovery strategy, the governor called for innovative thinking and collaboration to rebuild lost infrastructure and homes.
Zulum also appealed to the media to play a crucial role in raising awareness about the ongoing needs within the community, stating, “Your efforts in sharing necessary information and mobilizing support are invaluable.”
In closing, he expressed gratitude to all who have contributed to humanitarian efforts, especially the federal government, military personnel, and various UN agencies for their significant support. “Your humanitarian gestures have not gone unnoticed,” Zulum affirmed.
