Chelsea’s quest to secure Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has encountered challenges as the player has expressed a preference for football in Germany and Spain. The West London club is gearing up for a potential high-profile attacking acquisition in 2025, with Boniface emerging as a primary target.
At just 23 years old, Boniface played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s success last season, contributing 21 goals and 10 assists in 34 matches across all competitions, despite facing occasional injury setbacks. This season, he has continued his impressive form, scoring four goals and providing one assist in his opening six matches. Reports suggest that Chelsea could acquire the former Union SG player for approximately £70 million, with some at Stamford Bridge believing Boniface should be prioritized over Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, especially since he would command a lower wage.
However, Boniface’s recent remarks on his football preferences have raised questions about a potential move to the Premier League. He stated, “I’ve been saying it before I even had an international passport or before coming to Europe that I don’t really like the Premier League. I prefer German and Spanish football. I’m not saying if a top team comes for me, I won’t go, but if you ask me the two countries I’d love to live and play in, it’s Germany and Spain.”
In light of this, Chelsea is also exploring alternative options such as Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres. The club’s scouts have been monitoring Boniface, reflecting the growing interest in Nigerian players from top European teams.
Boniface joined Leverkusen last season for €20 million from Royale Union SG, where his exceptional performances not only helped secure domestic success but also led the team to the Europa League final. Currently valued at €40 million, he has four years remaining on his Leverkusen contract. The Bundesliga champions are keen to hold onto their prized asset, having previously deflected interest from Manchester United with a £47 million price tag last summer.
