Recent developments suggest that Black Midi may be taking a break from releasing new music. Over the weekend, singer-guitarist Geordie Greep hinted at this during a live session, stating, “Black Midi was an interesting band that’s indefinitely over.”
In a recent post that has since been removed, singer-bassist Cameron Picton expressed his surprise at the situation, mentioning, “We’d agreed not to say anything about ‘breaking up’ so I was as blindsided as everyone else last night, but maybe in a different way. I guess sometimes all you can say is lol. Anyway! Starting sessions for my own record soon, looking forward – should be good, hopefully great!”
A representative for the band confirmed that “Black Midi are on a hiatus for now while they are working on solo projects.”
This news comes as Geordie Greep prepares for a series of solo performances in North America, with concerts scheduled in September in New York.
Black Midi, formed in London in 2017 by Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, drummer Morgan Simpson, and guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, quickly rose to prominence within the experimental rock scene. Their diverse influences, ranging from hip-hop to progressive rock, helped solidify their reputation through electrifying performances in the London underground, particularly at the Windmill in Brixton.
The band’s critically acclaimed debut album, Schlagenheim, released in 2019, showcased their unique blend of noise-rock and intricate rhythms. Greep had previously emphasized the importance of creating danceable music, saying, “At the end of the day, a good melody or rhythm is as exhilarating as a 20-minute drone.” Following the departure of Kwasniewski-Kelvin, Black Midi pushed their creative boundaries further with their 2021 album, Cavalcade, which explored a wide array of musical styles.
