BJP MLA and Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht has put forward a proposal to rename the Mustafabad Assembly Constituency to Shiv Vihar, emphasizing local voter sentiments. This resolution is set to be discussed during the upcoming Legislative Assembly session.
It is important to note that this proposal is a private member’s initiative and not an official government action. The authority to rename an assembly constituency lies solely with the Election Commission of India.
Bisht, a prominent figure in the Delhi BJP and recently elected MLA from Mustafabad, had previously expressed intentions to change the constituency’s name to “Shiv Puri” or “Shiv Vihar” shortly after his election.
Following a significant electoral victory, where he defeated the AAP candidate Adeel Ahmad by over 17,500 votes in a predominantly Muslim area, Bisht reaffirmed his commitment to the name change. He stated, “I will change the name of the area from Mustafabad to Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar. I have expressed this intention before. I am puzzled as to why other political parties insist on keeping the name Mustafabad. Why shouldn’t a predominantly Hindu area be named Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar? The current name troubles the residents, and it must be changed. I will ensure this happens.”
Mustafabad, situated in North-East Delhi, was notably affected during the 2020 communal riots. While the proposal will be debated in the Assembly, any official name change would require approval from the Election Commission of India.
In addition to Bisht’s proposal, the Delhi Assembly will address significant issues, including a discussion on the CAG Audit Report concerning the operations of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Furthermore, AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha plans to introduce a resolution advocating for the free distribution of gas cylinders on special occasions by the Delhi government.
