Biden and Modi Discuss Ukraine and Bangladesh in Recent Call
WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden held a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, following Modi’s recent visit to Kyiv amid ongoing tensions stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This discussion underscored India’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in Ukraine.
Modi emphasized India’s dedication to the early restoration of peace in Ukraine during a public statement after their conversation. The two leaders also addressed the plight of Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh, in light of recent political upheaval in the neighboring country.
During the call, Biden acknowledged Modi’s proactive engagement with Ukraine and his recent trip to Poland—Ukraine’s significant Eastern European ally. The White House reaffirmed its support for Modi’s involvement in dialogue related to Ukraine’s peace formula, which prioritizes territorial integrity and the withdrawal of Russian forces.
In their discussions, Modi articulated India’s strong stance on sovereignty, declaring, "We support the respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. It’s our highest priority." This approach follows Modi’s controversial meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which drew criticism from Ukraine, particularly due to the timing coinciding with Russian missile attacks.
Historically, India has maintained a strategic relationship with Russia, dating back to the Cold War, while also becoming an increasingly significant buyer of Russian oil in response to Western sanctions. As tensions in Eastern Europe continue, the United States is keen to manage its alliance with India, recognizing its essential role in the Indo-Pacific region.
On another pressing issue, Modi raised concerns over the instability in Bangladesh following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who recently fled to India amid escalating protests. These protests emerged against a contested quota system for government jobs, leading to widespread civil unrest and numerous reports of violence against minorities.
Modi highlighted the urgent need for restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of vulnerable groups in Bangladesh during his dialogue with Biden.
Biden engaged in the call from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he is currently vacationing with his family.
