Benue State Governor Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia has addressed the pressing challenges faced by children in Benue, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to improve their circumstances. This statement was made during the inauguration of the State Steering Committee for the “Save the Benue Child” project.
Represented by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim, Alia highlighted the ongoing issues of inadequate education and healthcare that plague the youth in the region. His administration is committed to mobilizing all stakeholders through community outreach and engagement while providing essential support services.
Alia remarked, “Today, we confront the harsh reality that many children in Benue endure challenges no child should face, from limited access to education and healthcare to the dire effects of poverty and neglect. However, we also see a significant opportunity to create transformative change and foster hope.”
The “Save the Benue Child” initiative aims to establish a comprehensive support system tailored to the holistic needs of these children. Key focuses include enhancing access to quality education, ensuring health and nutrition, rescuing victims of human trafficking and exploitation, prosecuting offenders, and raising community awareness regarding these critical issues.
The government plans to collaborate with local communities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to ensure that initiatives are both effective and sustainable.
During the event, the Zonal Coordinator of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons called on all stakeholders to unite in safeguarding the future of children in Benue. The current rise in human trafficking incidents in the state was also noted by the NAPTIP Commander.
Furthermore, an executive director of a local foundation described the event as a pivotal step in the fight against human trafficking in the state.
