ECNETNews Reporting – WASHINGTON, USA – Belize’s permanent representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), Lynn Raymond Young, has officially assumed the role of chair of the permanent council, a position he will hold until December 31, 2024.
At the ceremony held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, Ambassador Young emphasized his commitment to pressing issues, stating, “As chair, I will prioritize efforts in eradicating poverty and fostering inclusive economic growth. We must focus on strategies that empower the most vulnerable, enhance access to education and health care, promote decent work, and foster resilient economies.” He further declared, “Belize remains deeply committed to the core principles that define the OAS: democracy, human rights, security, and integral development. These principles are the foundation of our Organization and the bedrock for our collective futures. As chair, I will work tirelessly to ensure our actions reflect these values.”
Outgoing chair, Victor Fernandes, the permanent representative of Barbados, expressed confidence in Young’s leadership, stating, “I am delighted to hand the gavel to my colleague from Belize. I am sure he will do an admirable job during his tenure. I thank you for the opportunity to serve as chair of the permanent council in this Organization.”
The vice chair position for the upcoming October-December term will be held by Francisco Mora, the permanent representative of the United States. The rotation of the chair and vice chair of the permanent council occurs every three months among member states, following an alphabetical order for the chair and reverse alphabetical order for the vice chair.
