Iconic rapper and DJ Fatman Scoop, renowned for his chart-topping hit “Be Faithful” and memorable contributions to tracks like Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That,” has tragically passed away. The artist collapsed during a performance in Hamden, Connecticut on August 30, as confirmed by local sources. Eyewitnesses captured footage of the emergency response team attempting to perform CPR on him while on stage. He was 56 years old.
In a heartfelt statement, his family remarked, “Fatman Scoop was more than a performer; he was a beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend. He brought laughter and unwavering support into our lives. Known worldwide as the undisputed voice of the club, his music inspired us to dance and approach life with positivity. His infectious joy and generosity will be profoundly missed but never forgotten. As we grieve his loss, we also celebrate his remarkable life and the countless individuals he impacted. Fatman Scoop’s legacy of love and brightness will forever remain in our hearts.”
Born Isaac Freeman III in New York City in 1968, Fatman Scoop grew up in Harlem, drawing inspiration from the vibrant hip-hop culture around him. He adopted his stage name from a nickname given to him by his uncle, a playful nod to his love for ice cream.
His defining hit, “Be Faithful,” emerged unexpectedly long after its initial release. Featuring infectious beats from the Crooklyn Clan that sample Faith Evans’ “Love Like This,” the track debuted in 1999 but didn’t reach the top of the British singles chart until 2003. Throughout his career, he produced three compilation albums: 2003’s “Fatman Scoop’s Party Breaks: Volume 1,” 2006’s “In the Club,” and 2015’s “Party King.”
With his distinctive and commanding voice, Fatman Scoop became a significant collaborator on some of the biggest tracks of the 2000s, contributing to songs by Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, Ciara, DJ Kool, and Tech N9ne. He also provided vibrant energy to remixes for A-list artists like Timbaland, Lil Jon, and Janet Jackson. In recent years, he collaborated on Skrillex’s “Squad Out,” and A$AP Rocky announced that Fatman Scoop will be featured on his upcoming track “Hood Happy,” alongside notable artists including Morrissey, Busta Rhymes, Flavor Flav, and Slick Rick.
