The Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has urged Oando Energy Resources Nigeria Limited, which recently acquired the Nigerian Agip Oil Company, to take immediate action on preventing oil spills and addressing vital issues related to employment, contractual benefits, and environmental pollution in the state.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Diri highlighted that resolving these concerns is crucial for improving the rapport between oil companies and their host communities. He insisted that Oando Energy must accept both the liabilities and assets associated with the acquisition to foster better relations moving forward.
During a recent courtesy visit from Oando Energy’s management at the Government House in Yenagoa, Diri pointed out that multinational corporations neglecting their corporate social responsibility often face conflicts with local communities.
He further stressed that qualified residents of Bayelsa should not only be prioritized for job openings but also included in management roles within the company. Diri expressed his commitment to collaboration, noting that a peaceful operational environment would benefit both the state and the oil company.
Diri stated, “The history of tension between Bayelsa State, its oil-producing communities, and your company stemmed from issues regarding employment and contractual benefits. This is an opportunity for you to mend relationships.”
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of involving Bayelsa’s people in employment and contractual arrangements to foster mutual respect and maintain smooth operations in the state.
In response, the Managing Director of Oando, Dr. Ainojie Irune, expressed confidence in starting anew to establish a positive working relationship with the state government, indicating that the visit aimed to officially introduce the management team and explore fruitful partnerships.
