Peter Hughes Departs the Mountain Goats After Nearly Three Decades
In a significant shift for the indie music scene, Peter Hughes has officially announced his departure from the Mountain Goats, a band he joined in 1995. Hughes has played a critical role in the band’s development, participating in every album since their 1994 debut, Zopilote Machine. The Mountain Goats expressed their gratitude in a heartfelt statement, marking his contributions over the years as invaluable.
“Sooner or later, everybody spots the exit that has their name on it, and for Peter Hughes, the time to leave the highway behind is now,” the band declared. “He’s made the call, and all that’s left for us is to salute his legacy.” The band emphasized the deep impact Hughes has had on their music and lives, stating that his dedication over the years will always be a vital part of their journey.
As a testament to his longstanding influence, Hughes’ final recording with the band was on their 2022 album, Jenny From Thebes. Fans will be delighted to know that the Mountain Goats are set to reissue their classic 2000 album, The Coroner’s Gambit, which featured Hughes.
Originally scheduled for this October, the Bochum Riders Tour—set to be a series of duo performances by John Darnielle and Peter Hughes—will continue as planned, now transitioning to a trio format with multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas and drummer Jon Wurster stepping in.
The Mountain Goats expressed their affection for Hughes, wishing him joy in all future endeavors and acknowledging that his absence will resonate both musically and personally with them and their extensive fan base. The band expressed a desire to celebrate the memories they shared, while also looking forward to their future as they carry on Hughes’ legacy.
