Bad Bunny has unveiled a new song titled “Una Velita,” which addresses the lingering impact of Hurricane Maria, a catastrophic event that struck Puerto Rico and other Caribbean regions in 2017. This marks his first release since last year’s album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana.
As Puerto Rico gears up for the gubernatorial election on November 5, Bad Bunny has been actively encouraging voter participation. The timing of the song coincides with the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Maria, prompting Bad Bunny to critique the political response to the disaster. The track features a poignant lyric in Spanish: “The palm tree on which they want to hang the country, one of these days we’re going to knock it down,” seemingly referencing the palm tree emblem of the governing New Progressive Party.
Additionally, earlier this week, Bad Bunny received multiple nominations for the Latin Grammys.
