DALLAS — A historic piece of baseball memorabilia linked to Babe Ruth is making waves, as the jersey worn by the legendary New York Yankees slugger during his famous “called shot” in the 1932 World Series is set to auction for an estimated $30 million.
The auction will take place on Saturday night in Dallas, conducted by a leading auction house.
Ruth’s iconic moment occurred during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, held at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on October 1. In a thrilling fifth inning, Ruth made a notable pointing gesture while at bat before hitting a home run against Cubs pitcher Charlie Root, solidifying his place in baseball history.
The Yankees emerged victorious with a 7-5 win, ultimately sweeping the Cubs to clinch the championship. This was Ruth’s last World Series appearance, and his “called shot” remains his final home run in championship play, highlighting its significance, according to sports experts.
“This jersey represents an integral moment in baseball history, connecting collectors to Ruth’s legacy and his most renowned achievements,” said a representative from the auction house.
The jersey’s storied past includes Ruth gifting it to a golfing friend in Florida in the 1940s, where it remained in the family for decades. It was sold to a collector in the early 1990s and later auctioned in 2005 for $940,000 before being consigned for sale again this year.
In a comparison of Ruth’s memorabilia value, another of his road jerseys, dating back to 1928-30, sold for $5.64 million at Yankee Stadium in 2019, underscoring the increasing demand for items linked to the baseball great.
This upcoming auction promises to attract significant attention from collectors and fans alike, further cementing Babe Ruth’s legendary status in sports history.
