Wizards of the Coast has made a significant announcement during the MagicCon Chicago preview panel, confirming that the much-anticipated mystery set for Magic: The Gathering in 2025 will feature Avatar: The Last Airbender. This exciting addition was teased last year at MagicCon Las Vegas, where the company initially revealed plans for collaborations with popular franchises including Final Fantasy and Spider-Man.
While the panel provided a brief teaser showcasing characters and artwork from the upcoming Avatar set, no new cards were unveiled. Fans can look forward to the Avatar expansion launching on November 21, 2025. The Final Fantasy set is slated for release in June 2025, whereas the Spider-Man set is still awaiting a specific release date.
Additionally, the 2025 release calendar includes three in-universe sets: Aetherdrift (launched February 14, 2025), Tarkir: Dragonstorm (launching April 11, 2025), and Edge of Eternities (scheduled for August 1, 2025). The MagicCon preview also revealed several cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm, including the serialized Mox Jasper, marking a return to the "mox" line of cards since the releases of Mox Opal and Chrome Mox in 2020.
The Universes Beyond initiative was launched in 2021, kicking off with a special drop of five cards themed around The Walking Dead. Since then, the initiative has expanded to include collaborations with franchises like Fortnite, Street Fighter, and Tomb Raider, and has seen themed retail releases for The Lord of the Rings, Fallout, and Doctor Who.
