Body of Missing Arizona Woman Found in Grand Canyon After Flash Flood
SUPAI, Ariz. — The body of a 33-year-old woman from Gilbert, Arizona, who went missing in Grand Canyon National Park following a devastating flash flood, was recovered on Sunday.
Emergency responders discovered the body of Chenoa Nickerson around 11:30 a.m. while a group was rafting down the Colorado River. The park service confirmed the recovery, stating that her remains were transported by helicopter to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s office.
In a heartfelt statement, Nickerson’s family expressed their gratitude to searchers and supporters, while requesting privacy during this difficult time. “It is with profound sadness that we confirm our beloved Chenoa has been found deceased. Her light will always be a part of us, and we will honor her vibrant spirit and cherished memories,” they stated.
National Park Service officials reported that Nickerson was swept into Havasu Creek near the Colorado River confluence on Thursday afternoon, lacking a life jacket at the time of the incident. She was hiking just half a mile from the river when the flash flood occurred.
During the flooding, her husband, along with over 100 others, was safely evacuated. The flood trapped hikers around Beaver Falls, a tourist destination known for its beautiful waterfalls, which can quickly become dangerous during heavy rain.
Governor Katie Hobbs has since mobilized the Arizona National Guard, including Blackhawk helicopters, to assist in evacuations from the village where several hikers were stranded.
The recent flooding has reportedly affected 104 tribal members and tourists near Havasupai Falls since the onset of the storm, as bridges were washed away and access became extremely challenging.
The Havasupai Tribe’s reservation is recognized as one of the most remote areas in the continental U.S., with access limited to foot, mule, or helicopter travel. Helicopter evacuations became essential amid the chaotic conditions and towering waterfalls.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nickerson’s death is currently underway by the medical examiner’s office and the National Park Service.
