Last week, the Democratic National Convention in Chicago showcased an array of stunning outfits as thousands of delegates made their way to support Vice President Kamala Harris, the party’s nominee. Many attendees expressed their political sentiments not just through clothing but through clever references to popular culture, highlighting female icons such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé.
Here are some of the most remarkable outfits from this year’s convention.
Raiden Gonzalez
Raiden Gonzalez from Salina, Kansas, donned an all-pink outfit representing LGBTQ+ rights and hailed both Vice President Harris and Beyoncé, who was rumored to be a special guest at the event. As a vice president of the Kansas Young Democrats, Gonzalez emphasized the need for inclusivity within the Democratic Party, stating, “We want them to know that they are not alone… they should continue fighting for what they believe in and who they are.”
His ensemble included a cowboy hat that he purchased locally as a nod to Beyoncé’s recent album, Cowboy Carter.
Meryem Maameri
Delegate Meryem Maameri from Twin Cities, Minnesota, used her platform to draw attention to the Palestinian cause. She wore a keffiyeh scarf, adorned with a button that read “Not Another Bomb” alongside adorned Palestinian attire, showcasing her solidarity with Palestinian Americans and Gazans. Maameri articulated, “I’m in this movement for a free Palestine… this is a way for me to show my support.”
Sherry McClain, Merika Coleman, and Carolyn Culpepper
The trio from Alabama, nicknamed the “Bling Sisters,” made a stylish statement in sparkly black jumpsuits to underscore their support for Harris. Merika Coleman stated, “We’re patriots as African Americans and people of color,” emphasizing their belief that Harris represents a significant milestone for their community.
Adam Peters and C.J. Petersen
Iowa delegates Adam Peters and C.J. Petersen made headlines with their custom t-shirts honoring Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Peters highlighted Walz’s connection to the LGBTQ+ community and emphasized his authenticity, while Petersen boldly declared his support for Walz’s strong stance on rights. “Mind your own damn business,” Petersen quoted, echoing the governor’s catchphrase, as a political statement against restrictive measures on personal freedoms.
Kelly Jacobs
Delegate Kelly Jacobs of Hernando, Mississippi, stood out on the convention’s final night wearing a dress featuring an image of Kamala Harris, which she crafted during the senator’s initial presidential campaign. In addition, Jacobs created 1,000 friendship bracelets to engage female voters, effectively blending her passion for fashion and activism.
Desiree Tims
Ohio delegate Desiree Tims honored the suffragette movement with a striking white suit complemented by patriotic accessories. Tims also displayed buttons advocating for voting rights and justice, responding to derogatory comments about Black workers made by former President Trump, reaffirming a sense of unity and empowerment within her community.
Sarah Arveson
California delegate Sarah Arveson showcased her union pride by wearing a UAW t-shirt emblazoned with a strong anti-Trump message. She underscored the importance of solidarity in the labor movement, proclaiming, “She walked the picket line with us. She’s been an ally.”
Ashley Fedan
Ashley Fedan from Washington brought along a plush cat named Gina—a playful jab at Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s remarks about “childless cat ladies.” She also wore a black frill necklace as a tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg and sported a sash proclaiming “Cowboy Kamala,” echoing a popular cultural reference within the community.
This year’s DNC not only provided a platform for political discourse but also showcased a vibrant display of fashion as delegates promoted their causes and celebrated their candidate in creative ways.
