West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the BJP during her address at an Eid gathering in Kolkata, labeling the party as the architect of a “ganda dharm” (dirty religion). She accused the BJP of inciting communal riots in the state, referring to it as a “jumla” (fake) party. In response, the BJP alleged that Banerjee’s comments reflect appeasement politics and portray her as anti-Hindu.
“I believe in the teachings of Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda, not the ‘ganda dharm’ propagated by this ‘jumla’ party,” Banerjee stated. She emphasized the need for unity, saying, “When the Army functions, it operates under one identity – Indian. However, some political figures seek to sow discord among communities, and we must not fall prey to their tactics.”
Banerjee urged the public to maintain peace and harmony, asserting, “We will not allow anyone to incite riots. While they may aim to create division, my mission is to prevent it.”
BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya responded sharply to Banerjee’s remarks, accusing her of being anti-Hindu and engaging in appeasement to secure Muslim votes. “Which Chief Minister would make such statements during Eid? Mamata Banerjee’s words aim to instigate unrest, but the BJP will not permit any division,” he asserted.
Bhattacharya also criticized Banerjee for allegedly undermining the legacy of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramhansa. “The direction in which Mamata is leading Bengal resembles the historical decline of Bangladesh into East Pakistan,” he warned.
The Trinamool Congress defended Banerjee, claiming that the BJP was misrepresenting her statements. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh voiced strong support for the Chief Minister, stating, “What she articulated is entirely accurate. The BJP distorts facts to fabricate a false narrative. We align with the true Hindu dharma of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramhansa.”
Ghosh further remarked on Banerjee’s secular background, stating, “She comes from a Brahmin family and stands for the rights of all religions. The BJP’s approach is detrimental to both Hindus and minorities as they prioritize vote banking over genuine public service.”
