The one-horned rhinoceros population within Kaziranga and other protected areas in Assam has seen a remarkable 86% reduction in poaching since 2016, as reported by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In a statement commemorating World Rhino Day, the Chief Minister credited this significant decline—where poachers killed 190 rhinos between 2000 and 2021—to the government’s commitment under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing that the rhino symbolizes Assam’s identity.
“Since the double-engine government took charge (in 2016), poaching has decreased by 86%,” he stated, highlighting the rhino as a vital element of the region’s biodiversity.
“We have implemented various initiatives to safeguard this valued species, expand its habitat, and ensure its safety,” he noted.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to rhino conservation, praising the efforts of those involved in preserving this iconic species. “It is a matter of immense pride that India is home to a large number of one-horned rhinos. I fondly remember my visit to Kaziranga and encourage everyone to explore it,” he remarked.
The last census in 2022 recorded over 2,850 rhinos, with Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve hosting approximately 2,613 of these magnificent animals, followed by Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary with 107 and Orang National Park with 101.
‘Kaziranga Model’ for Conservation
Wildlife officials in Assam stated that the ‘Kaziranga model’ has emerged as a blueprint for rhino conservation worldwide. The park employs a special protection force with a “zero tolerance policy” against poaching, alongside an anti-poaching surveillance camp for every 5.82 square kilometers.
Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve features 233 anti-poaching camps, each staffed by three to five personnel dedicated to protecting these animals.
“This year, we have recognized the local communities surrounding the tiger reserve for their crucial role in conservation efforts,” said Kaziranga’s Director. This acknowledgment included a procession showcasing a replica rhino in areas adjacent to the tiger reserve.
