A prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and halt the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, citing concerns over potential violence in the state.
In a recent statement to journalists in Osogbo, Oyintiloye expressed apprehension that proceeding with the election amid the ongoing political turmoil could escalate tensions. The state government has committed to moving forward with the election, despite the unrest stemming from the APC-led chairmen’s takeover of local government secretariats.
Oyintiloye contended that there is no leadership vacuum in local councils following the Court of Appeal’s reinstatement of APC chairmen and councilors, suggesting that conducting the elections would be unjustified.
He highlighted the recent violence in the state, which resulted in six fatalities and numerous injuries across various areas. “The state government must not endanger the lives of residents in the name of politics. It should seek resolution through the Supreme Court if dissatisfied with the Court of Appeal’s decision,” he stated.
While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies in restoring peace, Oyintiloye warned that the upcoming election could further heighten tensions. He appealed to President Tinubu to urge Governor Adeleke to suspend the election for the sake of public safety.
“The priority in Osun is peace, and we must avoid any actions that could destabilize the state,” Oyintiloye emphasized. He also reminded Governor Adeleke of the importance of upholding the rule of law, noting that it was the judicial process that facilitated his ascent to office.
“The primary responsibility of any government is to protect lives and property. Governor Adeleke must ensure that nothing occurs that could lead to bloodshed,” he added.
In his closing remarks, Oyintiloye extended condolences to the families affected by recent violence and reaffirmed the APC members’ commitment to lawfulness and support for constitutional measures aimed at safeguarding the lives and properties of Osun residents.
