Anutin Charnvirakul, the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, has voiced strong confidence that the party’s pro-cannabis policy will be embraced by the new government, allowing for a seamless transition in its implementation following the tenure of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.
In a significant shift, Mr. Srettha initiated legislative action in July aimed at regulating cannabis for medical and research purposes, reversing the government’s previous stance to relist cannabis as a narcotic substance.
Mr. Anutin stated that advancing the cannabis control bill, designed to strictly oversee cannabis use for public health and research advancements, is one of six critical policies proposed to the ruling Pheu Thai Party for inclusion in the coalition’s main objectives to be announced in parliament.
This initiative is framed as focusing on the research and development of Thai herbs, including cannabis, he noted.
When inquired about potential challenges from the Democrat Party, a new coalition partner that has historically opposed Bhumjaithai’s cannabis control bill, Mr. Anutin expressed confidence that the opposition may lack the votes necessary to impede progress, despite their dissent.
“The new Democrat team is different from its predecessor, and I trust in the collaborative spirit of Democrat leader Chalermchai Sri-on, who appears to have a deeper understanding of public needs,” Mr. Anutin remarked.
On the topic of a proposed entertainment complex featuring a legal casino, Mr. Anutin asserted that Bhumjaithai, as a key player in the coalition, would endorse this initiative as long as it is managed ethically and does not favor specific groups.
“I am not concerned about this project due to our strong ethical code; everyone is committed to upholding it,” he added.
Additionally, Bhumjaithai is advocating for measures such as decentralization, equal access to education, improved water management, and the promotion of clean energy.
