Michael Jordan made headlines during the 1990s when he transitioned from an illustrious NBA career to play baseball. Now, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards is contemplating a significant career shift of his own—toward professional football.
In a recent interview, Edwards expressed to a fellow athlete his ambition to join the NFL if he captures an NBA Championship in the near future. The Timberwolves are set to open the new NBA season against the Los Angeles Lakers, where Edwards will have the opportunity to compete alongside legendary players LeBron James and his son Bronny James.
Edwards remarked, “Football players can’t go play basketball. No way. I told my buddies, I said ‘if I win a ring in the next three to four years, I’m going to play football.’” However, he received a skeptical response from NFL star Justin Jefferson.
In the past, Edwards has shared his belief in his potential to be the first player to excel in both the NBA and NFL. He has also mentioned aspirations in baseball, showcasing his versatility as an athlete.
Notable multi-sport athletes like Bo Jackson, who played in both the NFL and MLB, have set precedents for such ambitions. However, no player has yet made the transition from professional basketball in the NBA to football in the NFL.
Since being drafted as the first overall pick in 2020, Edwards has emerged as one of basketball’s brightest young talents. He boasts an impressive average of 22.9 points, 4.1 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game over four seasons.
The upcoming season promises excitement as the Timberwolves aim to start strong while Edwards pursues his remarkable career aspirations.
