The Department of Highways is currently investigating an incident in which a metal sheet fell onto a vehicle on Rama II Road, highlighting concerns about construction safety along the frequently problematic route.
The event occurred near the Wat Pak Bo junction on Monday around 11:45 am, beneath an elevated highway that is still under construction, according to the director-general of the department.
The owner of the affected pickup truck, Arjin Rodthani, 46, reported that a 50cm metal sheet became embedded in the hood of his vehicle, causing a shocking experience for him and his family who were present at the time.
The incident quickly gained attention on social media, sparking public outcry and criticism regarding construction safety on the historically hazardous roadway.
Rama II Road has seen continuous construction for the past four decades and has been the site of numerous incidents where construction materials have fallen onto vehicles, some resulting in fatalities.
In light of this event, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has instructed relevant agencies to expedite completion of ongoing projects by next year.
According to Mr. Sarawut, the accident transpired outside of the approved construction hours of 8 pm to 5 am. Initial findings indicated that stormy weather and strong winds contributed to the sheet’s fall. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The contractor responsible for the construction has compensated the owner of the truck and has been ordered to halt work for three days pending a thorough investigation into the incident.
If found negligent in safety protocols, the contractor may face legal repercussions and potential penalties affecting their reputation.
In response to this incident, the Department of Highways has mandated evaluations of all ongoing construction projects along Rama II Road to prevent future accidents.
