NEW YORK — Another serious incident involving former President Donald Trump has emerged, this time an apparent assassination attempt while he was golfing in Florida. This alarming event has raised significant concerns regarding the safety measures in place for the GOP nominee’s campaign, particularly after a prior incident just months ago.
On Sunday afternoon, U.S. Secret Service agents intervened, firing upon an individual who was seen aiming an AK-style rifle from behind the foliage as Trump played at his West Palm Beach golf club. The FBI has labeled this incident as an attempted assassination.
Previously, at a rally in Pennsylvania in July, Trump was grazed by a bullet when a gunman accessed an unsecured roof, resulting in one death and multiple injuries. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges the Secret Service faces in ensuring Trump’s security, especially during his rallies that attract large crowds, while also highlighting vulnerabilities when he is off the campaign trail.
The landscape of Trump’s golf course allows visibility from outside the property, a fact that law enforcement has long recognized. Photographers were previously able to capture images of Trump golfing due to gaps in the shrubbery surrounding the course.
While Trump’s golf schedule isn’t always public, he frequently plays at Trump International Golf Club, located just a short drive from his Mar-a-Lago residence. The club features 27 championship holes and is a preferred venue for Trump, who often conducts meetings and meals there between golf rounds.
Having just concluded engagements on the West Coast, Trump was expected to address issues related to cryptocurrency the following day at Mar-a-Lago as he launched a new crypto platform.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, security measures had been relaxed due to Trump no longer being in the presidency, which affected the protocols observed at the golf club.
“He’s not the sitting president. If he was, we would have had this entire golf course surrounded,” Bradshaw explained to the media.
Law enforcement has commended the agents for their quick response during this critical situation. One agent who anticipated potential threats was able to spot the rifle before engaging the individual, ultimately averting a tragedy.
In correspondence with campaign staff, senior advisers acknowledged the decisive actions of the Secret Service, crediting them for protecting Trump during this incident. “President Trump and everyone accompanying him are safe thanks to the great work of the United States Secret Service,” they stated.
Unlike past presidents who typically reside in private, secure homes, Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago is accessible to club members, creating a unique set of security challenges.
The club frequently hosts events and fundraisers, allowing members to engage with Trump in informal settings. During his presidency, one significant meeting was famously held on the terrace following a North Korean missile launch.
The Secret Service is working in collaboration with local law enforcement to investigate this incident, with Trump set to receive a briefing from the acting director of the Secret Service.
The recent assassination attempt has ignited discussions among lawmakers about security at such political events. Representative Elise Stefanik expressed gratitude for Trump’s safety while questioning how such an event could happen again.
Leaders from both parties investigating security in recent political rallies have stated their concerns and are requesting briefings from the Secret Service.
Governor Ron DeSantis announced that Florida would initiate its own inquiry into the incident, emphasizing the need for transparency. Similarly, Congressman Ro Khanna demanded immediate answers and resources to enhance protective measures for Trump and other political figures.
President Biden expressed relief that Trump remained unharmed and condemned the growing trend of political violence. He assured continued support for the Secret Service to ensure the former President’s safety.
