WASHINGTON, USA – ECNETNews reports that the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) urges the international community to advocate for justice in response to crimes against humanity occurring in Venezuela.
The authoritarian Venezuelan regime has devised and enforced a brutal system characterized by repression and violence, resulting in imprisonment, torture, and fatalities, including those of minors. The OAS emphasizes that those responsible for these heinous acts must face justice to halt the ongoing human rights abuses that citizens endure daily. The International Criminal Court bears a critical responsibility in this regard.
This oppressive regime operates under a strategy aimed at obliterating public will and democratic consciousness, seeking to impose its authority through sustained crimes against humanity as outlined in the Rome Statute. Reports detail a range of abuses, including murders, forced migration leading to the worst migration crisis in the Hemisphere’s history, political imprisonment, torture, sexual violence, and the enforced disappearance of individuals, all in violation of international law.
While some remain passive in the face of these atrocities, others exploit the pursuit of justice, diluting accountability and treating the plight of victims as commodifiable. It is imperative that a more robust sense of responsibility emerges in addressing this human rights crisis. The approach of ignoring justice in response to victim testimonies is insufficient for building the solutions we envision. We cannot hold a lenient stance toward current dictators while simultaneously seeking truth and redress for past atrocities. This inconsistency must be eradicated, and we should collectively strive for justice for Venezuela.
Throughout this struggle, the regime has managed to deceive various negotiators and intermediaries. However, it has not succeeded in undermining the resilience of the Venezuelan people, who have persistently generated democratic alternatives amidst severe suffering and systemic human rights violations. The international community must recognize its obligation to deliver justice for the people of Venezuela.
