In a recent statement, senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi described the proposed “secular civil code” as a much-needed inclusive reform. Drawing attention to the support for a “uniform secular civil code” expressed by prominent figures such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar during the Constituent Assembly debates, Naqvi emphasized the relevance of this measure for modern India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the necessity of a uniform civil code during his Independence Day address, referencing Article 44 of the Constitution that mandates such a code nationwide. He stated, “A secular civil code is essential to eliminate discrimination based on religion. It is our responsibility to realize the vision of our Constitution’s framers.”
Naqvi, speaking to the press, urged caution against attempts to undermine the secular civil code through communal narratives. He noted that the nation has awaited the realization of this constitutional guideline for 75 years, yet it has consistently faced opposition rooted in communal sentiments.
He reminded attendees that Dr. Ambedkar and other distinguished leaders supported the implementation of a uniform secular civil code. However, due to narrow-minded communal fears, the constitutional promise has been relegated to the Directive Principles of State Policy.
Emphasizing the current national sentiment, Naqvi declared that the time has come to liberate the secular civil code from communal constraints. He reiterated that a secular civil code is a pressing requirement for the country.
When questioned about the recent seating controversy involving Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi during the Independence Day celebrations, Naqvi urged the Congress party to shed its “feudal arrogance” and cease the turmoil. Additionally, regarding the tragic incident involving a doctor in Kolkata, he accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of protecting the perpetrators.
