Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez has announced a surprising connection between the sci-fi film and the popular series, The Last of Us.
In a recent statement, Alvarez revealed that while writing Romulus, he was influenced by the storyline from The Last of Us: Part II, particularly the aspect of Dina’s pregnancy, which inspired him to incorporate a similar plotline for the character Kay in Alien: Romulus.
Furthermore, the casting of Isabela Merced as Kay caught some attention, particularly as she was also cast as Dina in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. Alvarez humorously acknowledged this connection.
Fans have speculated that the character Navarro in Romulus draws inspiration from Lev, another character in The Last of Us, which Alvarez hinted at with a playful response.
Released in theaters earlier this month, Alien: Romulus has quickly become a box office success, grossing over $225 million worldwide. This makes it the third highest-grossing film in the Alien franchise, following Alien: Covenant and Prometheus.
The production team employed artificial intelligence in the filmmaking process, a choice that has garnered both interest and criticism within the industry. Alvarez defended the use of AI amidst ongoing debates about its role in creative endeavors.
Meanwhile, The Last of Us HBO series is set to return in 2025, with Merced reprising her role as Dina, alongside Kaitlyn Dever, who has been cast as Abby and reportedly required additional security.
