Alec Stewart Takes on New Role as High-Performance Cricket Adviser at Surrey
Alec Stewart has been appointed as the high-performance cricket adviser for Surrey, set to begin his new role at the start of next year. This transition comes with a “significant reduction” in his workload.
After an impressive 11-year tenure as director of cricket, during which he helped Surrey secure a historic third consecutive County Championship, Stewart is stepping back to prioritize family time. The former England captain, who accumulated an astounding 40,936 runs in a distinguished 22-year playing career for Surrey, will serve in this new capacity for a fixed number of days each year, focused on sustaining the club’s successful trajectory.
Stewart expressed his lasting commitment to the club, stating, “Everyone knows my love of the club and what it means to me, and I’m very pleased that the club wanted me to continue in this new role that has been created. With this new set-up, I firmly believe that we can continue the success at Surrey that we’ve seen in recent times.”
In his advisory role, Stewart will collaborate with Surrey’s head coach Gareth Batty and captain Rory Burns, while also providing guidance on the talent development pathway.
Surrey has opted not to appoint a new director of cricket, recognizing Stewart’s invaluable expertise. Club chair Oli Slipper remarked, “We completely understood and accepted Alec’s decision to step back from his director of cricket role but always wanted to retain his impact at Surrey. I’m thrilled to say that we have found a role that works for all parties.”
