Alain Delon’s Family Decides Against Euthanizing His Beloved Dog
The family of the late French actor Alain Delon has made a significant decision following his passing. Delon, who died at the age of 88, had expressed a wish for his pet dog, Loubo, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois, to be euthanized and buried alongside him. However, his family has overruled this request.
In response to the outcry from animal rights activists, Delon’s daughter, Anouchka, confirmed that Loubo will not be put down and will remain a part of the family. Animal welfare advocates have expressed relief, emphasizing that Loubo has a home where he will be cared for.
French animal advocacy groups have condemned Delon’s initial request. They stated that the life of an animal should not depend on the circumstances of a human. Delon’s family has been reassured that Loubo will find a loving family if needed.
Notably, there are no laws in France that prevent pet owners from euthanizing their animals. In a previous interview, Delon had candidly shared his desire to be laid to rest with Loubo, whom he regarded with deep affection. He described their bond as unique, stating that he loved Loubo “like a child” and preferred to leave the world together rather than let his dog suffer alone.
Delon, a prominent figure in French cinema known for his roles in classics such as "The Samurai" and "Borsalino," had a long history with dogs; he had previously buried at least 35 dogs in a private chapel at his estate, La Brûlerie. In recent years, Delon had faced health challenges and had largely retreated from public life, with his last appearance being at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019, where he received an honorary Palme d’Or.
