The Royal Thai Air Force announced its decision to acquire Gripen fighter jets from Sweden instead of US-made F-16s. The selection committee made this choice after a comprehensive review of proposals from both manufacturers on August 20, as stated by Air Chief Marshal Phanphakdee Phattanakul, the air force commander.
The evaluation focused on critical aspects such as technology transfer and training offsets, which have become increasingly important in military procurements. After careful consideration, the committee opted for the Gripen E/F model over the F-16 Block 70/72 jets.
The air force will soon prepare documents outlining the details from both Saab and Lockheed Martin to share with the public and military leadership.
This procurement aims to secure four new fighter jets to begin replacing outdated F-16s that are set to be decommissioned soon. Sources indicate a prior preference for the Gripen model.
Final approval is pending from the new defense minister and the cabinet, which is anticipated to be established shortly following the election of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
ACM Phanphakdee expressed optimism regarding the decision, highlighting the significant role the new aircraft will play in enhancing the air force’s capabilities. The acquisition is expected to provide substantial advantages for national security and sovereignty protection.
