AI search tools frequently provide incorrect answers, according to a recent study.
Research revealed that when eight different AI tools were presented with an article excerpt and tasked to identify details such as the headline, original publisher, publication date, and URL, they delivered incorrect answers over 60 percent of the time.

The inaccuracies ranged from speculative responses to the creation of fictional links and sources, with some AI tools even providing plagiarized versions of actual content.

According to the study, these tools often presented false information with alarming certainty, typically lacking hedging language such as “it seems,” “it’s possible,” or attempts to acknowledge gaps like “I couldn’t find the specific article.”
While the complete study merits further examination, it serves as a reminder to approach AI search tools with skepticism. Notably, a significant segment of the population, around 25 percent of Americans, reported using AI for searches in place of traditional search engines.
Google is also expanding its AI initiatives, having recently announced plans to enhance AI summaries and begin trials of AI-exclusive search results.
This study adds to a growing body of evidence underscoring the unreliable nature of AI-generated content. As major tech companies integrate AI into their offerings, consumers should remain vigilant about the information they accept as accurate.
