The Deputy Finance Minister has announced the need for enhancements in the new co-payment tourism promotion programme aimed at increasing tourism in northern Thailand. Emphasizing the necessity for a boost in government subsidies and tourist quotas, the initiative focuses on reviving the region’s economy.
The programme, titled “Aeo Nuea Khon La Khrueng” (travel to the North at half prices), is projected to operate with a budget that may not reach the 24 billion baht allocated in previous initiatives, as it will now unfold in five phases designed to provide ongoing economic stimulus.
This announcement follows a statement from the Prime Minister, who expressed concerns over the current subsidy cap of 400 baht per tourist and a quota limit of only 10,000 tourists, deeming these figures inadequate for meaningful impact.
In light of recent flooding in the North, which has severely affected local economies, the region is in urgent need of income-generating strategies. The upcoming cold season is typically a peak time for tourism in northern Thailand, making timely intervention essential.
The Ministry of Finance is currently awaiting finalized details on the tourism promotion programme from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to determine the necessary budget. While the previous budget figure of 24 billion baht provides a reference point, no formal discussions have confirmed the exact funding needed for the new initiative.
Should the proposed budget fall short, the Ministry of Finance is optimistic about utilizing the central budget to cover any excess requirements.
As preparations continue, relevant authorities are updating tourism information databases to assist prospective travelers interested in taking part in the programme.
