Adil Rashid is confident that England’s newly appointed limited-overs captain, Harry Brook, is adept at balancing Test commitments with his responsibilities in white-ball cricket.
In a recent announcement, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Brook, 26, would be taking over the ODI and T20 captaincy from Jos Buttler. Rob Key, director of men’s cricket, noted that this new role for Brook comes earlier than anticipated, especially with an intense year of red-ball cricket on the horizon, including a five-Test home series against India this summer and an upcoming away Ashes series.
As England gears up for a one-off Test against Zimbabwe, followed closely by an ODI series against the West Indies, Rashid expressed his belief that Brook is well-prepared for the challenge ahead. “When someone takes over the captaincy, it isn’t an overnight transition. He has ample time and has already shown promise,” Rashid remarked.
Rashid commended Brook’s track record at Northern Superchargers, highlighting his positive mindset and respect among teammates both on and off the pitch. “There is a significant thought process behind his appointment. This is a monumental task, but he has the capability and drive to lead England to victories and potential World Cups,” Rashid added.
Despite turning 37 in February, Rashid is eager to continue playing a pivotal role in England’s new white-ball era under Brook and head coach Brendon McCullum. The seasoned player, with 292 international appearances, is motivated to help the team rebound from a disappointing Champions Trophy performance earlier this year as they set their sights on the T20 World Cup.
Looking ahead, Rashid emphasized, “This is a new era with fresh faces, and I’m very excited about it. Our primary goal is to be fully prepared for the upcoming tournament.”
