Dr. Usman Bugaje, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape and former National Secretary of the defunct Action Congress, has been outspoken in his criticism of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, describing it as a “disaster” from the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari to the current administration of President Bola Tinubu. He has publicly endorsed Prince Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), praising his character, competence, and courage—qualities he believes are essential for Nigeria’s progress amidst current challenges.
In a recent discussion with journalists, Bugaje addressed several key issues, particularly the call from the APC’s national chairman for northern support of Tinubu for the 2027 election, the rotation of presidential power between northern and southern regions, and the potential consequences for Tinubu in 2027.
On Political Rotation and Inclusivity
Bugaje emphasized that the notion of a fixed eight-year rotation between the north and south has become outdated, arguing that Nigeria’s political discourse must evolve. He pointed out that the political experiment of dividing power regionally has failed, leading to stagnation and regression in development. He advocates for a new approach that includes competent individuals from all regions, highlighting that successful governance should not be confined to any single tribe or region.
“We must start a new conversation focused on inclusivity and development. This dialogue should not be about tribal turn-taking but rather about selecting capable leaders from any part of Nigeria who can address the pressing issues we face,” Bugaje stated.
Criticism of Current Leadership
Azman Bugaje has consistently criticized the APC’s governance model, likening it to previous failures and calling out the trend of electing leaders based solely on regional loyalty. He expressed disillusionment with Nigeria’s political trajectory, stating that the current leadership lacks performance and accountability.
“The politicians have failed us. The focus should be on finding individuals who can actually govern and drive progress rather than perpetuating a cycle of mediocre leadership based on geographical origin,” he asserted.
Call for a New Political Framework
Bugaje champions the concept of coalition leadership, advocating for the inclusion of technocrats and skilled individuals capable of revitalizing critical sectors such as energy and transportation. He argues that this approach would address the root causes of Nigeria’s issues rather than merely manage symptoms.
“We must steer away from politicians entrenched in corruption and incompetence. Nigeria needs knowledgeable leaders who can collaborate to tackle the nation’s dire challenges,” he added.
Addressing Future Elections
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Bugaje has made it clear that he does not support a return to the same old political practices that have led to the current state of affairs. He maintains his stance on prioritizing character, competence, and courage in leadership choices, rather than succumbing to traditional party loyalties or regional biases.
“Regardless of where a presidential candidate originates, the crucial factors are their ability to perform and respond to the needs of the people. If they cannot deliver, then they should not remain in power,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of accountability in governance.
