The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has announced the organization’s commitment to leveraging the chambers of commerce as a tool for regional development and empowerment. This statement was made during a workshop held in Umuahia aimed at raising awareness of the newly launched Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA).
Ogbuku emphasized that NDCCITMA was conceived out of a genuine desire to address the business challenges faced in the Niger Delta region. He reiterated that the current NDDC board is dedicated to initiating development through effective economic empowerment strategies.
“The chambers of commerce are instrumental in enhancing business communities,” he stated, reinforcing the NDDC’s commitment to repositioning the region’s capital and investment potential. He added that NDCCITMA would bridge the gap between the NDDC and entrepreneurs, offering the necessary support to those unable to meet strict financial criteria.
Represented by the Abia State Director of NDDC, Mr. Azubuike Nwubani, Ogbuku asserted the need for collaboration with NDCCITMA to create pathways to prosperity for the population.
Amb. Idaere Ogan, the inaugural Chairman of NDCCITMA, highlighted that the establishment of the chambers aligns with the strategic objectives of the region. He noted that the people have long sought a platform for genuine guidance and assistance in business growth and capability enhancement, a need that NDCCITMA intends to fulfill.
Ogan emphasized that the chambers aim to function as development partners with the NDDC, fulfilling its mandates and driving development initiatives. He confirmed a commitment to adhere to the Memorandum of Understanding established between NDDC and NDCCITMA.
The NDDC Executive Director of Projects, Mr. Victor Antai, indicated that the workshop was intended to heighten awareness about NDCCITMA and the opportunities it presents across the Niger Delta. Antai acknowledged the struggles of local businesses, particularly small-scale enterprises, and underscored the alarming scarcity of micro-businesses.
He noted, “To stimulate grassroots economic growth, we have formed a strategic partnership with NDCCITMA to engage small business groups and develop sustainable growth models.”
Antai confirmed that the NDCCITMA Board of Directors consists of established professionals from the nine NDDC states, ensuring a wealth of experience and expertise.
Chief Dimgba Eruba, an Abia representative on the Board of NDDC, praised Ogbuku’s visionary leadership and his unwavering commitment to sustainable development in the region. He encouraged attendees to take full advantage of NDCCITMA’s offerings to elevate their businesses.
The event also attracted key figures such as Chief Geoffrey Udeagbara, President of the Aba Chamber of Commerce, and Chief John Udeagbala, former President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture. Udeagbala expressed fulfillment at the successful registration and inauguration of NDCCITMA, while Udeagbara highlighted the potential for local chambers to collaborate on impactful projects through this robust platform.
Mr. Linus Eze, Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises in Abia State, noted that NASME stands to gain significantly from NDCCITMA, especially if it can facilitate easier access to funding for businesses.
The establishment of NDCCITMA marks a significant step toward fostering economic growth and development in the Niger Delta region.
