As "Joker: Folie à Deux" hits theaters, the film’s ending has sparked significant debate among audiences. Opening to $37 million, the sequel’s earnings fell short of the $96.2 million debut of its predecessor in 2019. Now, an actor from the film is shedding light on the fate of Arthur Fleck and the Joker amidst this controversy.
Spoiler Alert: The following contains plot details from "Joker: Folie à Deux."
Connor Storrie portrays a "young inmate" who delivers a shocking twist in the film’s climax by attacking and murdering Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, subsequently adopting Arthur’s Joker identity with a grisly gesture.
In a recent interview, Storrie shared insights about the film’s unexpected ending, which he kept under wraps for two years. He praised director Todd Phillips for taking the bold risk of making a musical sequel. "It was polarizing before it was even seen," Storrie noted. He acknowledged the mixed reactions, pointing out that such creative choices inherently invite scrutiny. "You don’t make such a big swing like that without knowing it gives people the opportunity to not get behind your choices."
Storrie also admired Phillips for his courage in delivering a sequel that diverged from audience expectations, recognizing the passionate following of the original film. "I am not shocked people are either pro or against what goes down in it," he stated.
Despite the divisive reception, prospects for a sequel centered on Storrie’s Joker appear slim given the current box office performance. However, he noted that his role was always meant to serve Arthur’s narrative. "It felt very clear that this is Joaquin’s movie. I saw my place in that. It’s a part of Arthur’s story more than it is becoming anything else," he explained.
"Joker: Folie à Deux" is currently showcasing in theaters, continuing to evoke strong reactions from audiences and critics alike.
