On the night of December 31, 2024, Hyderabad authorities apprehended 2,883 individuals for drunk driving, a decrease from 3,001 cases recorded during the same celebration in 2023. Thanks to stringent measures, the city experienced incident-free New Year’s Eve festivities.
Drunk driving checks commenced at 8 p.m., with traffic and law enforcement deploying checkpoints at multiple junctions and flyovers throughout the city.
According to traffic officials from the tri-commissionerates, the breakdown of offenses included 1,425 people in Hyderabad, 839 in Cyberabad, and 619 in Rachakonda.
In Rachakonda, out of the 619 caught, 526 were riding two-wheelers, 64 were in four-wheelers, 26 were in three-wheelers, and three were truck drivers. Notably, the highest number of violators were recorded in LB Nagar (232) and Malkajgiri (230). Among those apprehended, 262 were aged between 21 and 30; 12 were aged 18 to 20; five were over 60, and two were under 18.
More than 5,000 officials were mobilized for the drunk driving operations. The highest Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level recorded was 339, with the majority of cases (297) falling within the 51-100 mg/dL range, as reported by Rachakonda DCP Traffic –1 S. Malla Reddy.
Additionally, over 199 individuals exhibited blood alcohol levels exceeding 100 mg/dL, and three surpassed 300 mg/dL. It is noteworthy that all offenders in Rachakonda were male drivers.
Those booked for violations will be summoned to court following the filing of charge sheets. Their driving licenses will be confiscated and forwarded to the relevant Road Transport Authority for suspension under Section 19 of the MV Act, 1988.
