NAIROBI, Kenya — A Kenyan man facing murder charges in Massachusetts has been extradited after nearly a year on the run, according to local authorities.
Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, whose body was discovered in a vehicle at Logan International Airport in Boston on October 31.
Kangethe departed from Nairobi on Sunday and is slated to appear in Suffolk Superior Court in Boston to answer the charges on Tuesday, as confirmed by the Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions.
“I would like to emphasize our commitment and collaboration with the United States as this case progresses,” stated the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Earlier in July, a court had issued the extradition order for Kangethe.
Kangethe, who renounced his U.S. citizenship, made headlines when he escaped from a police facility in January following a visit from his Kenyan attorney. As a result, disciplinary measures were taken against four officers present during his escape. He was subsequently re-arrested one week later, allowing extradition proceedings to resume.
Margaret Mbitu, a health care aide in Halifax, Massachusetts, was last seen leaving her workplace on October 30 before being reported missing by her family.
Initial investigations revealed that Mbitu had left work with Kangethe to travel to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he resided. Prosecutors revealed that Kangethe was found with several personal items belonging to Mbitu.
