As anticipation builds for the 2024 election, thousands are set to converge in Chicago for the much-anticipated Democratic National Convention (DNC).
This longstanding tradition dates back to the 1830s, originating with Democratic delegates supporting President Andrew Jackson in Baltimore for his second-term nomination.
Notably, this year’s convention will feature a different dynamic, with Vice President Kamala Harris already officially nominated in a virtual roll call following President Joe Biden’s decision to exit the race.
However, cherished DNC traditions, including star-studded appearances and moving speeches from influential party members, will continue. Here’s what you need to know.
When and Where is the DNC?
The DNC is scheduled to take place at the United Center Arena in Chicago from August 19 to August 22.
What Happens at the DNC?
This year’s convention will highlight speeches from prominent Democrats and the adoption of the party’s platform, particularly since Ms. Harris and Governor Walz have been nominated.
Delegates will work throughout the event to finalize the platform, a draft of which has already been made public. Key issues include strategies to reduce inflation, combat climate change, and address gun violence. The draft outlines comparisons between Democratic positions and the ultra-conservative Project 2025, linked to potential second-term scenarios for Donald Trump, despite his effort to distance himself from it.
Who Will Be Speaking?
A lineup of notable Democrats and celebrities will grace the stage in Chicago. President Biden is expected to deliver the keynote address on Monday night. Additional speakers include First Lady Jill Biden, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, and other party leaders.
On Tuesday, former President Barack Obama will give remarks alongside Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
Wednesday will showcase former President Bill Clinton and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while Governor Tim Walz will deliver a significant speech following his nomination.
The convention’s climactic moment will occur on Thursday when Vice President Harris formally accepts the presidential nomination, dedicating her speech to the theme “For the Future.” Additional prominent figures like Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are also slated to participate throughout the week.
Alongside political figures, several everyday Americans, including Trump supporters, will take the stage as well.
Who Else Will Be in Attendance?
An estimated 50,000 attendees are expected to participate in this year’s convention, including delegates from state Democratic parties and superdelegates—major elected officials and notable Democratic members.
The media presence will be significant, with thousands of journalists covering the events.
Expect a glitzy affair, reminiscent of previous conventions that included celebrities like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Eva Longoria. Rumors about major stars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift attending this year have circulated, though confirmations are yet to materialize.
Will There Be Protests?
Protests are anticipated outside the DNC venue, with many centered on opposition to U.S. support of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Organizers predict attendance of up to 10,000 demonstrators, amidst discussions regarding designated protest areas with the city of Chicago.
How Can the Public Watch?
Public access to the convention will be limited to volunteers only. Major networks will provide comprehensive coverage of the proceedings, including speeches and events.
Innovatively, the convention plans to offer vertical live streams on various platforms for mobile viewers, marking a first in DNC history.
