Stephen King’s iconic 1974 novel Carrie is set to receive a new life as a television series, with renowned horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan at the helm for Amazon’s Prime Video. This upcoming adaptation marks the fourth interpretation of the chilling tale over the last five decades.
As reported, Amazon MGM Studios is stepping up to produce a "bold and timely reimagining" of Carrie, which tells the story of a teenage girl tormented by her fanatically religious mother and bullied by her peers. In a dramatic twist, Carrie discovers her telekinetic abilities, ultimately seeking revenge against those who have wronged her.
Flanagan, who has experience adapting King’s works, previously directed the film Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, and is also working on the forthcoming movie The Life of Chuck. Although he initially took on the ambitious project of adapting King’s The Dark Tower for Prime Video, the current status of that endeavor remains uncertain. His notable portfolio includes acclaimed horror series created for Netflix, such as The Haunting and Midnight Mass. Recently, he has also been tapped to direct the next installment of The Exorcist franchise.
The original film adaptation of Carrie, directed by Brian De Palma, was released in 1976 and featured Sissy Spacek in the lead role. This classic film later inspired a sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, over twenty years later, and a televised remake in 2002, along with a theatrical reboot in 2013 starring Chloë Grace Moretz.
Should Amazon’s Carrie series move forward, Flanagan will assume the role of showrunner, bringing new dimensions to this timeless horror narrative.
