Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress general secretary, will make her electoral debut in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, as the party has nominated her for the upcoming bypoll scheduled for November 13.
Previously, she campaigned extensively for her brother Rahul Gandhi, who contested and won two seats during the general elections—in Wayanad (Kerala) and Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh).
Since an MP can hold only one seat, Rahul Gandhi chose to retain Rae Bareli, leaving Wayanad vacant and prompting the need for a bypoll.
The Election Commission has confirmed that the bypoll will take place on November 13.
According to an official release from the party, “Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the proposal to nominate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the candidate for the Lok Sabha bye-election from Kerala.”
This bypoll marks the first electoral challenge for Priyanka Gandhi (52), who has expressed a desire to contest elections for some time now.
In addition, the Congress has announced the candidacies of Rahul Mamkootathil from Palakkad and Ramya Haridas from the Chelakkara Assembly constituency for the upcoming bypolls.
