NEW DELHI — A prominent politician in Mumbai, known for his connections within the Bollywood film industry, was fatally shot just weeks ahead of a crucial state election.
Baba Siddique, aged 66, was shot multiple times outside his son’s office in Mumbai on Saturday evening, according to police reports. He was pronounced dead at the city’s Lilavati Hospital.
Siddique had a long-standing affiliation with the Indian National Congress but had recently switched to a regional party that governs Maharashtra state. He was well-known for his lavish gatherings, often attended by various Bollywood celebrities.
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed his shock over Siddique’s murder. “This incident will be rigorously investigated, and we will ensure strict action against the attackers. We will also identify the mastermind behind this crime,” Pawar stated.
Reports indicate that two suspects have been apprehended, while authorities continue to search for a third individual believed to be involved.
Sources suggest that the arrested suspects claim affiliation with a criminal gang known for previous violent acts.
With elections in Maharashtra approaching in November, this incident has raised significant concerns in the political landscape.
