A man was arrested at an intersection near a rally for Donald Trump in Coachella, California, after being found in illegal possession of a shotgun and a loaded handgun. According to police reports, the 49-year-old suspect was driving an SUV when deputies stopped him at a security checkpoint, discovering two firearms and a high-capacity magazine in the vehicle.
The suspect was apprehended without incident and faces charges for possession of loaded firearms and a high-capacity magazine. Authorities from the U.S. Secret Service confirmed that Trump was not in any danger during the incident, ensuring that the rally’s security measures were not compromised.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco referred to the suspect as a “lunatic,” stating that the situation did not pose a threat to Trump or attendees at the rally. Bianco expressed his belief that officers may have thwarted a potential assassination attempt, although he acknowledged that it was challenging to ascertain the suspect’s true intentions.
Federal authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, which unfolded just an hour before Trump was scheduled to address supporters. The incident underscores ongoing security concerns surrounding the former president, especially in light of previous alleged assassination attempts this year.
Additionally, the suspect has been charged with two misdemeanour weapon offenses and released on $5,000 bail. Law enforcement discovered irregularities within the suspect’s vehicle, including a counterfeit license plate and multiple passports with various names.
Federal officials are coordinating with local law enforcement agencies on this matter, ensuring the safety of Trump and future events. Security measures have been significantly heightened in response to earlier threats, reinforcing the importance of vigilance during political gatherings.
