Dan Evans Aims for Olympic Glory with Andy Murray in Final Tournament
Dan Evans has expressed his determination to secure an Olympic medal alongside Andy Murray, hoping to provide the Scotsman with a memorable send-off in his final professional tournament in Paris. After withdrawing from singles competition, Murray’s aspirations now lie solely in the men’s doubles event, where he partners with Evans.
Highlighting the significance of their team, Evans commented, “It’s cool, but there’s nothing more I want than to get a medal for him, and for myself obviously.” Despite Evans also competing in singles, he is concentrating on the doubles after a knee injury limited his preparation since the Queen’s Club tournament.
Their campaign kicks off on Sunday against Japanese players Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori. While they may not be favored to clinch a medal, both have a history of success in doubles and have represented their nation brilliantly in the Davis Cup.
Evans stated, “We both agreed at the start of the week that we’re prioritizing doubles. I’ve played some singles, but we’ve focused on that and done some good work. Knowing Andy as I do, he remains as competitive and dedicated as ever. He was out there doing sprints after our session—not here just to say goodbye but to win a medal and, hopefully, celebrate that on the podium.”
Murray is a legend in Olympic history, having made history as the first player to win two singles gold medals at the London and Rio Games, and he carried the British flag during the 2016 opening ceremony. Evans remarked on Murray’s immense impact, stating, “He is one of the leading lights ever to have worn Team GB kit.”
At 34, Evans is making his Olympic debut after missing the 2016 Games and being sidelined from Tokyo due to Covid. He described the experience of living alongside Murray and the British men’s tennis team as both enjoyable and unique, saying, “It’s been really good and very different, a positive change.”
Evans concluded by highlighting the camaraderie among the athletes and the opportunity to interact with fellow competitors, adding, “It’s pretty cool to see all the other athletes getting their coffee and hear about their day.”
As excitement builds for the Paris 2024 Olympics, fans can look forward to following the developments and celebrating the athletes’ achievements on various news platforms.
