A nature reserve in the Philippines, highly praised by climate activists and film stars alike, is currently facing a significant disinformation campaign on social media as it strives to maintain its conservation efforts. Investigations reveal that nearly 100 fake accounts and pages have been disseminating misleading information about the Masungi Georeserve and its caretakers. Most of these accounts were removed following inquiries about their activities.
Despite its acclaim for reforestation initiatives against climate change, the reserve is grappling with threats from illegal loggers, land grabbers, and quarrying companies. A representative from the reserve described the situation as a coordinated attack orchestrated by local politicians and business interests, although the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) denied these allegations.
The identity of those behind the disinformation network remains unclear; however, evidence suggests involvement from a public relations consultant with a focus on “reputation management.” The Masungi reserve, located east of Manila, is renowned for its breathtaking limestone formations and lush rainforest, and counts prominent activists among its supporters.
The reserve has been combating illegal activities for years, but this smear campaign is believed to have intensified recently. Billie Dumaliang from the Masungi Georeserve Foundation noted a surge in false information aimed at undermining their environmental protection efforts.
The online harassment occurs amid increasing physical violence against environmental defenders in the Philippines, a country that ranks as the most dangerous in Asia for such activists. Previous incidents include the wounding of two forest rangers in 2021, with widespread reports indicating 298 killings of environmental defenders since 2012.
By investigating the disinformation, a pattern of collaboration among fake accounts was identified, with peculiarities such as profile pictures of celebrities and animals, suggesting a lack of authenticity. These accounts have focused on discrediting the Masungi Georeserve Foundation, claiming financial motives behind its operations.
The campaign coincided with DENR’s controversial proposal to terminate the 2017 contract that allows the Masungi Georeserve Foundation to manage the majority of its land, raising concerns among international celebrities and environmental advocates who have voiced their support for the reserve.
As aspects of the smear campaign unfolded, the DENR’s dual role was called into question, given its authority to issue mining permits while also employing individuals to protect the environment. The agency has denied any involvement in the disinformation, labeling its communication as transparent and fair.
Evidence points to a public relations consultant tied to deceptive advertisements promoting political figures, contributing to ongoing speculation about political motivations behind the disinformation efforts.
Despite the challenges posed by this online disinformation, Dumaliang remains committed to the preservation of Masungi, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty surrounding them. The campaign highlights a growing concern over the impact of false narratives on environmental protection efforts in the Philippines.
