A tragic incident occurred in Puliyanam near Angamaly, where a man was found dead, and his wife was discovered charred in their rented home in an apparent case of suicide early Friday morning.
The victims have been identified as Sanal Sasikumar, 39, and Sumi Sanal, 37. Their two children, aged 11 and 4, also suffered burns. The severely injured younger child was initially taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a specialized medical center due to the extent of injuries.
Hospital sources reported that the child was admitted with severe burns and is currently on a ventilator in critical condition, while the older child sustained only minor injuries.
Authorities located a note believed to be written by the wife, indicating financial difficulties facing the family.
Fire service officials stated a suspected gas cylinder leak was the cause of the blaze. Responders faced challenges reaching the scene due to the house’s location but were able to extinguish the fire using water from a neighboring property. The gas cylinder was also safely defused on-site.
A local council member revealed that the couple operated a citizen service center and had limited interactions with their neighbors.
Neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing the children’s screams and witnessing the fire. They had to forcibly open the door to rescue the children, who were then transported to the hospital by a nearby resident.
The family had lived in the area for nearly a decade but kept to themselves, typically leaving for work in the morning and returning in the evening.
Individuals experiencing distress or suicidal thoughts are encouraged to seek support and counseling.
