The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that false records were created at the Tala police station regarding the rape and murder of a doctor associated with R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. This claim was made on September 25, 2024, during a remand hearing before the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Sealdah.
The CBI has requested judicial custody of two key accused: Abhijit Mondal, the former official-in-charge of the Tala police station, and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College. This request follows their arrest on September 15, 2024.
According to the CBI’s remand document, new evidence emerged during the custodial interrogation indicating that certain police records in this case were altered or fabricated. Family members of the victim have raised allegations of evidence tampering and delays in the FIR, stoking public outcry.
The agency is seeking custody of the accused until September 30, emphasizing the need for further interrogation to analyze the Call Data Records (CDR) linked to the case. The CBI has stated that these records involve a concerning volume of calls that require verification.
On the same day, the West Bengal BJP organized a protest near the residence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, expressing outrage over the doctor’s tragic rape and murder, which occurred on August 9, 2024. Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari highlighted judicial concerns regarding the CBI’s findings and the implications of evidence tampering.
Mr. Adhikari insisted that the truth would emerge, signaling a growing demand for accountability in this high-profile case.
In related news, a controversial statement made by Trinamool Congress MLA Narayan Goswami has ignited public debate. He encouraged a grand celebration for the Durga Puja festival, suggesting that diminished festivities were an attempt to tarnish the state’s image. This has been met with backlash from those feeling that such celebrations are inappropriate given the seriousness of the recent crime.
