ECNETNews, New York, NY, September 25, 2024: The U.S. Department of State has unveiled a significant $5 million investment in food security assistance for Guatemala, as part of the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) initiative.
This announcement was made by Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and Environment, José W. Fernandez, during a key session at the UN General Assembly. The event also featured representatives from important agricultural stakeholders who underscored their commitment to empowering local Guatemalan communities through VACS.
This funding is set to bolster sustainable agricultural practices in Guatemala within the framework of the U.S. government’s Feed the Future initiative. The project will provide local farmers with essential training on effective nutrient management practices to enhance soil health, fertility, and crop diversity. Additionally, innovative agricultural technologies will be introduced to help farmers build resilience against the impacts of climate change.
In partnership with the Guatemalan government and other international entities, this initiative aims to uplift approximately 1.6 million individuals who depend on agriculture while tackling the pressing issue of chronic malnutrition, which affects 47% of children under five in Guatemala.
Initially launched in 2023 to address food insecurity in Africa, VACS has since broadened its reach globally, including efforts in the Western Hemisphere. This initiative represents a critical component of the U.S. strategy to combat hunger through sustainable agricultural practices, collaborating with global organizations focused on agricultural development.
