Three-time Champion Hurdle winner Istabraq has passed away at the age of 32, as confirmed by his owner JP McManus.
Originally a talented flat horse trained by John Gosden, Istabraq evolved into one of the most celebrated National Hunt horses after joining Aidan O’Brien’s stable. Throughout his illustrious career, he achieved 23 victories out of 29 races over obstacles, making history as the fifth horse to win three Champion Hurdles at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival in 2000.
His remarkable record includes winning the 1997 Royal and Sunalliance Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, alongside four Irish Champion Hurdles, two Hatton’s Grace Hurdles, and an Aintree Hurdle.
Istabraq’s racing career concluded in 2002 when he was pulled up during his pursuit of a fourth Champion Hurdle title at Cheltenham. He has since lived a long and fulfilling retirement at Martinstown Stud in County Limerick, celebrating his 32nd birthday in May.
In a statement, McManus expressed his sorrow, stating: “Sadly, Istabraq passed away at 1.15 am this morning at the ripe old age of 32. He was a very special horse who gave us many great days of fun and enjoyment.”
He also extended gratitude to the dedicated staff at Martinstown for their impeccable care over the years and reflected on the wonderful memories Istabraq has left for his family.
