A Kentucky sheriff has been arrested after a deadly shooting incident involving a district judge in his chambers.
District Judge Kevin Mullins was fatally shot multiple times at the Letcher County Courthouse, according to authorities. Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines, aged 43, is now facing a charge of first-degree murder in connection with this tragic event.
The incident occurred on Thursday following an argument inside the courtroom, though the specifics of the dispute remain undisclosed.
Judge Mullins, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the shooting, which took place around 2:00 PM local time in Whitesburg, Kentucky, approximately 150 miles southeast of Lexington. Sheriff Stines was taken into custody without incident at the courthouse.
Kentucky’s Attorney General announced that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted to ensure justice is served.
In response to the violence, Kentucky Governor expressed his sorrow over Judge Mullins’ death, emphasizing the need for a better future amidst the increasing violence in society.
