GEORGETOWN, Guyana – President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali honored the legacy of Sir Shridath Ramphal, recognizing him as a pivotal architect of Guyana and a distinguished figure in the Caribbean and Commonwealth, during the funeral service held at Promenade Gardens. President Ali emphasized the significant contributions Sir Ramphal made to his homeland.
“Few individuals exemplify the essence of a global citizen like Sir Shridath. His life and legacy highlight not only his exceptional career as a legal expert, statesman, and diplomat but also his unwavering commitment to Guyana,” President Ali stated.
Sir Shridath, a towering figure in international diplomacy and one of the Caribbean’s most revered elder statesmen, passed away peacefully on August 30 at the age of 95. His extensive career significantly influenced global diplomacy, Caribbean development, and the fight against institutional racism.
President Ali highlighted Sir Shridath’s legal acumen and diplomatic skill, which helped to shape enduring strategies in international relations, including non-aggression and peaceful dispute resolution.
Even in his later years, Sir Shridath remained a dedicated advocate for Guyana’s territorial integrity, playing an essential role in the nation’s legal team before the International Tribunal of the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention, affirming Guyana’s maritime rights.
“He stood resolute in defending Guyana’s case before international courts, always demonstrating his deep concern for our nation’s future. Sir Shridath reminded us that democracy is fragile and must be safeguarded at all costs,” President Ali remarked.
Reflecting on his interactions with the late statesman, President Ali noted that Sir Shridath promoted the unity of Guyana, embodying the motto “One People, One Nation, One Destiny.”
In a message shared at the service, President Ali read a note from Sir Shridath expressing hope for national unity and urging the younger generation to pursue this noble goal.
“We are better positioned than ever as a nation to achieve our shared aspirations. Your generation must integrate this quest, and everyone, including my generation, must support you,” the note stated.
“Sir Shridath has rightfully earned his place among the greats in Guyana’s history, and his contributions to both our nation and the world will be eternally cherished,” President Ali affirmed.
In tribute to Sir Shridath, family, friends, heads of state, and notable figures commemorated his impactful life and legacy.
The Chairman of CARICOM and Prime Minister of Grenada noted that, “Sir Shridath was at the forefront of recognizing the connection between environmental issues and development.”
Former Prime Minister of Jamaica reminisced about Sir Ramphal’s wisdom and humanity, stating, “No one has worked more passionately for unity than this remarkable leader.”
Prime Minister of Barbados remarked, “If anyone epitomized the term Global Citizen, it would be Sir Shridath Ramphal. His extensive contributions to our region and the world have forever engraved his name in Caribbean history.”
